The Domain Extensions

If you’ve been planning to buy a domain name for your business, blog, or simply for personal use, you may want to consider first the definitions for each domain name extension terms.

  • .com – As we all know, .com domain names is the most common available domain extension in the online industry. It is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) in the Domain Name System of the internet. The .com extension is derived from the term ‘commercial‘ and many individuals, netrepreneurs, and most organizations used to pick this domain extension with or without commercial purposes. This gTLD is so familiar that most people will just key in their browser ‘.com’ after a website’s name to reach the site.
  • .org – is the second most common domain extension and its primary purpose is for non-profit organizations and trade groups. Many non-profits secure rights to both the .org and .com extensions.
  • .info – is probably one of the cheapest domain name extensions. You can get .info names for as low as $3-$1 or less in domain registrars such as Namecheap and GoDaddy. These extensions is a obviously a term for ‘information‘ and informative resources in the internet.
  • .net, .biz – are appealing and rising domain name extensions after .com’s in the internet industry today. The .net extension is a good alternative after .com and .org’s. It is derived from ‘network‘ that can also be used for organization purposes and technology. The new comers such as .aero, .coop, .museum, .name, .pro, .biz also has specific uses and the .biz is becoming popular nowadays to be an alternative domain ext. for such business purposes.
  • .tv -  is also among one of the rising TLD’s and the mainly for streaming and television/video related websites.
  • .edu – is mainly for educational and academic institutions such as colleges and universities. Gaining a backlink from domain extensions like .edu and .gov can give a big boost to your PR.
  • .gov – is used for websites that are being held in the United States government.
  • .mil – is like .gov but is mainly for Military.
  • .int – classifies organizations that are being endorsed by an international treaty.
  • .travel – classifies travel related organizations.
