WordPress 2.8.1 Beta 1 was Released

By Ezra On July 10, 2009 Under WordPress

A lot of people had faced a couple of problems and issues regarding the version 2.8 in WordPress, more likely to be in the plugins wherein after installing and activating the plugin – you’ll be prompted with a note “the plugin does not have a valid header.” However if you are new here, I posted a tutorial on how to fix this minor problem awhile ago.

Anyway, I see there’s a new update called 2.8.1 Beta and it’s available now. I haven’t updated yet as I need to back-up first before changing anything else.

Here are some of the issues that are fixed in beta 1.

  • Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
  • Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
  • The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
  • A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
  • Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.

Whilst checking out the WordPress.Org Blog, I dunno if it’s only me or whatever, but I did saw a ‘smiley’ just at the upper right side of the categories.

I did try it in several browsers like Opera, Firefox and Chrome but it just shows up.

I wonder how many people have already noticed it, and I dunno it if was really intended or just a bug.
